Gender and Performance

Course Information

Description

How does performance shape gender—especially as it intersects with race and sexuality? And how can gendered performances change the world, creating a new future? “Gender and Performance” engages different—and often conflicting—perspectives to answer these questions. In the first half of the course, we encounter concepts and theoretical tools that enable us to look anew at familiar performances (including those in media, sports, religious and secular rituals, theatre, activism, and our everyday self-presentation). In the second half, we examine activist performances from across a political spectrum. We ask, what forms of performance-based activism are effective, and why?
