The Show-Tune Canon Meets the No-Show Songbook
TDM 194S

Course Information

Description

a. This course places show-tunes in radical dialogue with street-music of the 20th century: rock, disco, punk, rap and beyond.

b. This course also invites students to create the first scene of their own

MINI-POP-MUSICAL!

c. It also invites the student to utilize short self-made podcasts and videos as weekly assignments. Unless they’d rather write papers.

This Course Asks a Few Questions:

What can we learn about race, religion, class, gender, sexuality, immigration and capitalism, by comparing how these subjects are framed in the show-tune realm vs the popular song realm?

And what can we learn by creating radical conversations between contemporary pop songs and traditional show-tunes?
