Description

a. Students will be offered various creative avenues to explore throughout the semester and for their Final Project will:

1. Learn how to write for your own “musical-theater-pop-band”

2. Create a 7-page “mini-musical.”

3. Learn how to write stand-alone songs & one-act scenes.

b. Singer + Song = Story, teaches you to create songs and scenes that glimmer with irreverence, personal-truths, detail and immediacy.

c. The course is looking for students who wish to experiment with unique approaches to song & theater making, approaches which are drawn from your own interests, obsessions, vocations and, of course, your politics. 

d. The course is also eager to re-define what and who an audience is, based on the specifics of whoever the creator is trying to reach with their work.

e. INSTRUMENTS!!! Holden Chapel has them set up and waiting for us to make the music happen on day one! Both the musically proficient and non-proficient Will.Make.Music.In.This.Class! Just as you don’t need to be an expert to play with a toy, this course will teach the non-musician how to develop a relationship to an instrument (which is a polite, Harvardian way of saying “It’ll be like punk rock ;)

f. Students will learn a technique called “autobiographical myth-making” where they will be encouraged, not only to tell their own stories, but to “autobiographically mythologize” their personal narratives into Tales Worthy of Their Badass Truths.

g. Performing is encouraged but not mandatory.

h. The Final Project will be unique to each student and will be discussed and agreed upon with Prof. Stew by the halfway point of the semester.
