Course Information

Description

Directing Lab: Directing is painting with bodies in space. It requires compositional, emotional, literary and dramaturgical consideration. This practical, foundational directing course invites students to discover a distinctive artistic voice and perspective. We will explore directing as a practice of curiosity, collaboration and discovery. Each week, students will read a play, choose a scene to direct, cast their fellow classmates and rehearse the scene independently to present the following week. The course is oriented around performance that holds all its elements in equal value: when text, performance, movement, space, and design are interconnected elements of a unified artistic vision. "Artistic Literacy," a shared vocabulary of major artists and their works, will provide a bedrock for our  conversations. Careful reading of dramatic texts by writers such as Maria Irene Fornés, Tennessee Williams, and Caryl Churchill will inspire a deeper understanding of how form shapes meaning and where dramatic tension resides.
