Solidarity: Group, Self, Identity
SOC-STD 98VT

Course Information

Description

How do we figure out who we are and, arguably more importantly, how do we get things done? Can we theorize a self or a group identity without relying on essentialist or perhaps harmful beliefs?  What makes people stick together and what makes things fall apart? We will learn from theoretical debates in feminist, queer, Black, democratic, radical (left and right), postcolonial, and disability studies on questions of agency, solidarity, and liberation.  We examine the kinds of solidarity and coalition that can exist across class-lines, across the world, from many different lenses. This course focuses on theoretical and historical methodology. This is a junior tutorial.
