Course Information
Description
The course is intended to provide a foundation for understanding mental health across the life course from a population and health equity perspective. The course curriculum is informed by the Lancet Commission on Global Mental Health (2018) which proposed a reframing of mental health as a development priority. The Commission proposed three guiding principles of reframing: conceptualizing mental health as a dimension and not solely as the presence or absence of a diagnosed mental disorder; understanding the origins of an individual’s mental health through a convergence of genetic, biological, early life and social and environmental factors; and adopting a rights-based perspective to responding to mental health needs in the population. This course is one of the required courses for the interdisciplinary concentration in Population Mental Health for MPH candidates at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Cross listed at the Chan School of Public Health as GHP 204.
