Course Information

Description

This course builds on the principles taught in the Oral System Sciences course (in particular, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology disciplines) in the second-year curriculum. Students will spend time in an active oral medicine practice applying their didactic knowledge as part of a team to diagnose and manage patients with a variety of oral infections, immune-mediated diseases, neoplasms, reactive conditions, and iatrogenic disorders. Under the supervision of attending oral medicine specialists, they may have the opportunity to participate in various tests and procedures including clinical testing, microbial cultures, exfoliative cytology, and superficial soft tissue biopsies when clinically indicated. In addition, students will participate in surgical oral pathology slide conferences to correlate clinical and histopathologic findings in an effort to better understand the pathologic entities.
