Description
Clinical exposure to pediatric patients starts in the third at HSDM. Patient care will occur in the Student Teaching Practice, which follows a comprehensive care model. In addition, students may have the opportunity to treat patients while on rotation at Boston Children’s Hospital. These encounters are designed so the general dentist may be able to care for children of all ages. Students will have the opportunity to manage the following: recognition and diagnosis of intra- and extra-oral pathology such as hard and soft tissue abnormalities, malocclusion and related dentofacial problems, applied growth and development, diagnostic methods, diagnosis and treatment planning, caries prevention, interceptive orthodontic therapy, simple restorative treatment, psychology of the child and adolescent, dental trauma, identification of child abuse and neglect, management of special health care needs, perinatal oral health, and oral health care for the adolescent patient. A part of this clinical training is an understanding of when referral to a pediatric, or other specialist, is indicated. The expectation will be for students to demonstrate competency in managing the child and adolescent patient.
