Description
This course is designed to teach students the skills they need to provide basic preventive, restorative, and orthodontic care for children and adolescents. This includes exposure to ideas and training in the areas of growth and development, behavioral management, pulp therapy, restorative procedures, and management of traumatized teeth. Students learn classification of malocclusion, dentofacial growth and cephalometrics, as well as biomechanical principles of tooth movement and correction of maligned teeth. Management of the developing occlusion and decision-making are emphasized through history, examination, analysis of clinical records, diagnosis, and treatment planning. In addition, students construct active appliances and perform orthodontic treatment. Finally, students gain experience in the management and care of medically, emotionally, and/or physically disabled children. Students learn the fundamental differences between restoration of primary and secondary teeth with emphasis on tooth preparation and fabrication of the stainless steel crown. In the dental laboratory, students construct appliances for space maintenance and minor orthodontic tooth movement. The typodont course is utilized to demonstrate the effects of orthodontic forces on tooth movement and to enable students to acquire skills in banding and bracketing the dentition of orthodontic treatment.
