Course Information

Description

Anatomy I provides students with a rigorous, systems-based foundation in gross anatomy, emphasizing the relationship between structure and function and its integration into clinical practice. The course consolidates and deepens anatomical knowledge by moving from basic structure identification to the application of form–function relationships with explicit clinical correlations.

The course focuses on a sequential study of the gastrointestinal, hematologic, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, endocrine, and reproductive systems. Each system is studied in parallel and in coordination with the Integrated Human Physiology (IHP) courses, reinforcing physiological and pathophysiological concepts across the curriculum.

Anatomy I prepares students to recognize, organize, and apply anatomical knowledge to support clinical reasoning, diagnostic selection and interpretation, and patient care assessment. Content is integrated across organ systems and builds on material from earlier coursework to promote a longitudinal and comprehensive understanding of health and disease. The course also contributes to preparation for the USMLE Step 1 examination.

Course sessions occur approximately every other week and combine didactic overviews with hands-on laboratory experiences using Donor material. Course performance assessments include didactic consolidation/laboratory preparatory quizzes, in-lab quizzes, consolidation quizzes, and laboratory-based practical examinations.
