Description
The OP502M.8 Advanced Research-based Ophthalmology Elective introduces students to a clinical or scientific project in the field of Ophthalmology. A course compendium, which collates projects offered by faculty members may be obtained from the course administrator in advanced. Students are expected to review this compendium, speak to a few faculty members whose projects are interesting, and select one preceptor with whom the student will develop a research question. A paragraph describing the project must be submitted to the course director and course administrator at least 6 weeks in advance of the elective. The course director will review the proposal to ensure that it is doable during the rotation and will reflect positively on the student's subsequent residency application. Once approved, the course director will contact the Registrar to approve enrollment. The clerkship is meant to be scholarly experience with at least 80% of time spent on the research performed. Up to 20% of direct patient care may be arranged with the preceptor to supplement the research experience, but these clinical activities MUST NOT overlap with other rotating students. Moreover, this clerkship should be performed after completing a clinical ophthalmology elective such as OP501M.8 or OP503M.7 (or a visiting student's home clinical elective) to give students clinical context to the scholarly activity.
