Description

Prior approval required, please email Dr. Sara Neill (sneill@bidmc.harvard.edu), forward approval to registrar@hms.harvard.edu.  Waitlist is not reviewed unless approval email is received. The advanced clinical elective in Family Planning at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School will provide senior medical students with experience in clinical care, scholarly work, and advocacy in Complex Family Planning.

Students will provide direct care to patients seeking contraceptive care and induced and spontaneous abortion care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a tertiary referral center for complex abortion and contraception cases. In addition, students will gain exposure to other abortion and contraception care models, including community-focused care at Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts.

Because family planning care sits at the intersection of medicine, policy, and research, students have the opportunity to integrate their clinical knowledge with ongoing scholarly work in the field. This will be done through a collaboration with Ibis Reproductive Health, where students will spend an average of one day a week participating in research and scholarly work that aims to advance family planning care.

Didactics will include a reproductive-justice curriculum, as well as foundational learning modules on contraception and abortion care from the Ryan Family Planning Program. At the end of the rotation, the student will present a lecture on a Complex Family Planning topic of their choosing (selected with the assistance of the course director or key faculty) and complete a scholarly project. The scholarly project will be designed by the student in collaboration with the course director and key faculty, and may range from writing findings related to participating in research, advocacy, or development of patient-centered educational tools and materials.
