Course Information

Description

The brain is constantly changing. Brain development continues over the course of an individual’s life, undergoing many steps of embryonic events, postnatal maturation, learning, and aging. Thus, our current thinking, sensing, and moving is structured by an enormous history of individual development. In this course, students will learn how the brain develops to shape our social and affective decision-making, with a focus on the neural mechanism of brain maturation. We will discuss how early life experiences leave sustained effects on brain function, potentially causing psychiatric symptoms in adulthood. Throughout, we will work towards understanding how pre-programmed developmental events are modulated by social and non-social environmental factors. In addition to gaining developmental knowledge, students will also learn how to critically read original articles and to present and discuss conceptual ideas and potential future directions.
