Course Information

Description

Transformational Theory. This seminar explores a body of analytical techniques that fall under the rubric of transformational theory: Neo-Riemannian theory, mappings of musical spaces, and recent applications of transformational approaches to body-instrument interactions. Through weekly discussion of key texts, and musical analyses touching on various repertoires (19th-century Western art music, 20th-century film music, popular music, post-tonal music), students will develop a critical understanding of the context, limits, and affordances of transformational theories.
