Storytelling as Care In Times of Crisis: The Theory, Craft, and Workshop of Narrative
MMH 707

Course Information

Description

The bedrock of this course is the notion of storytelling as care: a constant, whether in times of crisis (in both its modern and ancient definitions) or healing. Students will be steeped in the foundations of storytelling craft and narrative theory, building and refining their skills before applying them to a variety of storytelling modalities: journalism, creative nonfiction, memoir, graphic novels, film, podcasts, art installations, and performance. Students will be asked to be both rigorous and exploratory, collaborating with each other in small, workshopped projects. They will understand how a story can be told in different formats, the aesthetics and ethics of care in storytelling, and how to craft a narrative as an intervention, particularly during crises. There will be readings, film screenings, podcast listening sessions, and immersion in different forms, as well as generously structured time to build practical skills.
