Recent Debates in Critical Theory
HIST 1989

Course Information

Description

This seminar for advanced students explores various debates in recent critical theory, with an emphasis on close reading and the philosophical evaluation of texts.   Focusing primarily on exponents of Frankfurt School critical theory, we will explore basic questions such as:  what is the relationship between critical theory and genealogy?  Must critical theory subscribe to a philosophy of history? Does critical theory presuppose a idea of progress?  What is the relationship between socio-historical description and moral evaluation?  Does a critique of the social world commit us to a concept of human nature or other forms of essentialism? We will read authors such as: Jaeggi, Honneth, Rosa, Allen, Fraser, and Foucault.

This course is only available for advanced undergraduates.
