France Under Nazi Occupation
HIST 144

Course Information

Description

France was one of many countries during the Second World War that was occupied by – and whose government actively collaborated with – Nazi Germany. Its history offers a vantage point from which to consider political polarization and democratic collapse; collaboration, resistance, and the murky moral universe in between; Vichy government ideology and its impact on everyday life, individual rights, and the rule of law; antisemitism and the Holocaust; the complex status of colonies during the war; political reconstruction in the wake of war; and competing memories of wartime collaboration and resistance. Research skills will be scaffolded into the course.
