Course Information
Description
Screenwriting with the Mystics asks how mystical traditions can illuminate the dramatic at the heart of storytelling. Students study character, desire, conflict, and resolution alongside concepts of longing, trial, annihilation, and return. Readings will include Hollywood screenplays, screenwriting texts such as Robert McKee’s Story, and mystical narratives; examples may include Majnun Layla, The Lost Princess, and The Dark Night of the Soul. Through reading, film analysis, and screenwriting workshops, students explore how traditions can inform contemporary storytelling while developing work from their own religious, ethical, or intellectual inquiry. The course culminates in an original short screenplay grounded in each student’s own practice and designed for feasible production.
