Storytelling Through Film and the Divine
HDS 3322

Course Information

Description

Bridging filmmaking frameworks with spiritual inquiry, this course approaches storytelling as both a creative craft and a disciplined contemplative practice. Students will examine narrative structure, character, conflict, transformation, symbolism, and visual storytelling alongside Sufi concepts such as the journey, longing, annihilation, and return. Readings may include selections from Aristotle, Ibn ʿArabi, and contemporary writers on cinema and spirituality. Through analysis of films from Hollywood and global cinema, students will consider how visual storytellers represent faith, transcendence, and encounters with the unseen.

Assignments will include analytical responses, screenwriting and directing exercises, and a short film, screenplay, or media project rooted in each student’s own scholarly inquiry.
