Course Information
Description
For centuries, Vienna stood as the capital of a vast empire stretching from Switzerland to Ukraine and Poland to Bosnia. Last seat of Europe’s oldest ruling dynasty, this embattled fortress city experienced around 1900 a sudden, unparalleled burst of innovation. Viennese achievements in philosophy, psychology, medicine, biology, economics, jurisprudence, politics, architecture, urban planning, literature, music, and the visual arts were foundational for the modern age. Through close readings in literature, art history, and psychoanalysis, this discussion-based course explores this city as an uncanny space, homelike and terrifying, where the many of the dreams—and nightmares—of contemporary life were first dreamt.
