Description
How can art be cosmic, and how to turn the cosmos into art? Long before the modern space age, human beings were launching themselves into the stars through art. The seminar explores how human creative expression has historically integrated with the vast, transcendental, and often invisible forces of the universe. You will traverse the boundary between the material and the spiritual, exploring how art serves as a vessel for navigating the cosmos, and how the universe acts as an endless source of artistic and philosophical inspiration.
We experience out-of-body flights and cosmic roaming with the First Emperor’s Terracotta Army and through Buddhist caves. We will study the metaphysics of the ancient Indian “Cosmic Dance” alongside modern space exploration as a spiritual and technological quest, examining the legacies of Russian Cosmism and American Astrofuturism. We will analyze how modern designers and “cosmic-eco-artisans” use geometry and complexity to visualize cosmic harmony and imagine new planetary realities.
Whether you are interested in Buddhist cosmology, the philosophical evolution of space exploration, or the intersection of art, architecture, and cosmology, this seminar will fundamentally transform how you view humanity’s place in the total universe. Join us to discover how the art of the past holds the blueprints for the universes of tomorrow.
NOTE: The seminar will integrate visits to visits to labs (CAMLab, etc.), class sessions in Harvard Art Museums, and the Harvard College Observatory.
