Practicing Civil Discourse and Dialogue for Turbulent Times
EXPOS 45

Course Information

Description

Expos 45 is an experiential course that aims to improve students’ ability to examine and practice difficult conversations. From debates with friends, to tricky questions in job interviews, to contentious classroom discussions, Harvard students encounter challenging moments of communication throughout their time on campus. To address these challenges, we will draw on civil discourse research, negotiation principles, and applied performance techniques. We will learn actionable methods to build trust, listen with curiosity, and try on different perspectives. We will probe our own beliefs and what motivations and values underlie them. Through structured dialogue and discussions, students will build confidence in their speaking skills, learn strategies for impromptu speaking in tense moments, and learn how to prepare for and stay present during difficult conversations. These valuable skills matter all the more in a world where communication needs to bridge differences and where polarization can make real dialogue difficult.
