Introduction to Bioelectronics
ENG-SCI 258
Subject & Catalog Number
Course Information
Description
This course introduces the principles and technologies used to measure and control biological systems electronically. Applications include electrophysiology, diagnostics and therapeutics, biomolecular synthesis and sequencing, and wearable and implantable devices. Students will examine bioelectronic systems across three interconnected layers: circuits and signal processing for electrical sensing and stimulation; electrochemistry and materials science at the semiconductor–bio interface; and biological function spanning molecules, cells, tissues, and organs. The course integrates theoretical foundations with practical considerations in device design, measurement, and experimentation. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, students are expected to have introductory knowledge of electrical engineering, chemistry, and biology, with a foundation in circuits being particularly helpful. The contents and course requirements are similar to those of Biomedical Engineering 129 (BE 129), with the exception that students enrolled in Engineering Sciences 258 (ENG-SCI 258) are expected to undertake additional assignments.
Course Notes
The total enrollment cap is for BE 129 and ES 258 combined.
