Course Information
Description
A rigorous introduction to the fundamental principles and applications of quantum mechanics, with emphasis on concepts relevant to modern quantum technologies. Beginning with archetypal quantum systems, students use and apply the postulates of quantum mechanics, developing the concepts of observables, rotations, the Heisenberg uncertainty relation, and time evolution of quantum states. Coupled spin-1/2 systems provide an
introduction to entanglement and its role as a uniquely quantum resource.
The course then develops the foundations of quantum computing, including qubits, quantum logic gates, measurement, quantum circuits, and simple quantum algorithms, with comparisons to classical computation. Current physical implementations of quantum computers are reviewed. Additional topics include bound-state wavefunctions of atoms in optical tweezers, rigid-rotor quantum states, and spectroscopy. The course integrates foundational theory with applications at the intersection of quantum physics and emerging quantum technologies.
Recommended Prep
Basic linear algebra and calculus background at the level of Math 21a (multivariable calculus), Math 21b (linear algebra), or AM 22a.
