Description

In the ELOE program, we are striving to make positive change that increases access, equity, agency and excellence in education in the U.S. and around the world. But to transform education, we must shift how we think about problems, how we work on problems, and how we navigate complex contexts. In this class, you’ll learn how to lead and facilitate work in teams through a semester-long simulation focused on addressing the most durable problems in education一problems that have no easy solutions and deserve collective action. Specifically, you will learn how to work with a team to examine problems and root causes, draft theories of action and develop strategies and plans for implementation-- all while managing group dynamics, navigating the politics of change and communicating to diverse stakeholders. You will leave the course with practical frameworks, tools, resources, and processes to apply to your future work transforming the education sector in collaboration with others. The course is ideal for students who want to hone their understanding of the program’s core competencies in a community of experienced professionals that value teamwork, personal reflection, and applied practice. 

This is the only course designed exclusively for students in the ELOE program with the aim of addressing the ELOE core competencies comprehensively and building a strong ELOE community. This course fulfills the ELOE Program Core Experience (PCE) requirement. The course is open only to ELOE students and cannot be taken as an elective.

Learning Goals <p>Students in this course will learn essential knowledge, skills and dispositions as outlined in the ELOE Core Competencies, specifically:<br>- Knowing how to lead a team to develop and advance a vision, theory of action, and strategy in a complex environment (Competency 1)<br>- Building a team culture that fosters trust, belonging, communication, as well as risk-taking, learning, innovation, and meeting standards of excellence (Competency 2)<br>- Listening actively to multiple, divergent perspectives to understand problems and their root causes; communicating problems and potential solutions to a variety of audiences (Competency 3)<br>- Working with others to analyze trade-offs and possible unintended consequences when making difficult decisions in a complex political environment (Competency 4)<br>- Being able to manage interpersonal relationships, conflict, and group dynamics across multiple lines of difference in a way that models and nurtures personal and professional growth (Competency 5)</p>
Career Focus This course is intended for future leaders who want to build skills with leading teams, collaborative problem solving, strategic planning, communicating to stakeholders, and navigating the politics of change. The skills gained in this course will be useful for those who will become school leaders, system leaders, leaders of new and established organizations, and those working to support any organization or program with creating a strategy to address complex problems.
