Description

Students should think of this third ELA methodology course as a discussion "lab" — a place to engage in the deep and scholarly work emerging from the field of ELA, to think critically about problems as they arise, and to draft and clarify the teaching values and practices that embody them. In this course, we attempt to bear witness to, create, and foster the conditions for authentic learning. Using transcript analysis and sustained reflection, students develop a deep familiarity with discussion as a phenomenon — moving toward becoming the kind of facilitator whose competence cannot be contained by magic protocols, but must instead be cultivated through a disciplined attentiveness to what speaking and listening actually do in a room. The culmination of the course is twofold: a set of private principles motivating your work as a teacher in the year 2027, and a discussion intervention or design aimed at fostering authentic learning through speaking and listening in the ELA classroom.
