Description

In this course, we will explore the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the special education process, special education litigation, IEPs, and disability categories through a critical lens.  This course will begin by unpacking intersectionality and Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit) as tools to support our analysis of the impact of discriminatory attitudes, policies, and practices on the lives and schooling experiences of children/adults with (dis)abilities in the United States. We will engage special education policy in our current context through a historical lens, this is particularly important given the continued existence of practices that serve to exclude students identified with (dis)abilities at the intersections of race, gender, socioeconomic status and other identities.  As stakeholders in education, we will also critically analyze our own practices as a way to disrupt racism and ableism in our own work.
