Supervised Research in Human Development and Education
EDU S995
Subject & Catalog Number
Course Information
Description
A supervised research experience provides HGSE Ed.M. students in the HDE program* with the opportunity to conduct academic research within the existing research portfolio of an approved HGSE faculty member for credit toward the degree. Each student enrolled in S995 is supervised by the HGSE faculty member overseeing the lab, center, or project in which that student is conducting research. In 2026-27, only projects related to human development and overseen by one of the participating researchers listed below may count toward S995. Exceptions may be granted in rare instances for HDE students who submit a petition to conduct human development-related research under supervision of an HGSE-affiliated academic researcher (principal investigator).
A Fall or Spring supervised research experience can be completed for four credits (approx. 10-12 hours per week for a full semester) or for two credits (approx. 5-6 hours per week for a full semester). A research apprenticeship contract is developed between the student and the supervising HGSE faculty member, identifying learning objectives, expectations for working hours, meetings (e.g., lab meetings; one-on-one check-ins), and research tasks to be completed during the research experience.

It is students' individual responsibilities to secure a research opposition through CareerEdge, at the Internship and Research Fair, or by coordinating with eligible faculty regarding their availability.
Supervised research experiences can be taken for 2 or 4 credits in the full-term or 2 credits in fall 1, fall 2, spring 1 or spring 2.
