EDU S375

Course Information

Description

The arts play a significant role in advancing struggles for social change in settings across the globe. Through the arts, people create self-determined stories and visions of public life, forge solidarities across lines of difference, and learn to organize new publics. This course will provide students with an opportunity to examine and complicate these propositions through a field experience seminar in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Students in this course will connect with artists and educators in Puerto Rico and will engage in community artmaking practices in real time. In the process, students will learn about the history and culture of Puerto Rico and will gain valuable insight into how arts education practices can be organized to support shared goals in civic life.

Note: This course is limited to 12 students and requires an application and instructor approval to enroll. Successful completion of S312 is strongly preferred. This course is made possible through generous funding provided by the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and major expenses in connection to this course will be fully covered.
