Description

*Application-based Enrollment* This course examines systems leadership and collective action in creating and sustaining equitable arts and culture leadership. We will explore core facets of creative justice, emergent strategy, systems leadership, and collective action, applying them to historical and present ideologies and definitions of leadership. Learners will examine their taught and embodied definitions of leadership, working towards both collective and personal definitions that apply to their life and work. 

Guiding questions include: Who has traditionally defined what a "leader" is and looks like? What does leadership mean to me? Where are these beliefs and definitions rooted? What can we learn from collective (and collectivist) leadership models? How does leadership inform justice and equity? What aspects of leadership do I want to learn, stretch and grow into?

Through group discussions, readings, and multi-modal learning labs, students will gain a rigorous understanding of innovative theories and practices in equitable leadership, and arts management, at large. The course will also feature arts and culture sector leaders sharing from the field. This course is ideal for graduate students who are currently, or aspire to be, [arts and culture] leaders.

Learning Goals 1) examine taught and embodied definitions of leadership through an intersectional and social justice lens, 2) become deeply intimate with core course concepts surrounding: cultural equity, creative justice, emergent strategy, systems leadership, and collective action, 3) experience broad exposure to arts and culture leadership across K-12 education, funding, non-profits, and practicing artistry, 4) have a working definition of what equitable leadership looks and feels like to them, 5) start to explore the role(s) of practice, research, and policy in shaping equitable arts leadership
Career Focus <p>This course is ideal for graduate students who are currently, or aspire to be, arts and culture leaders.&nbsp;This includes arts administrators, managers, entrepreneurs, artists, educators, school leaders, higher education faculty and staff, and beyond. Although this course is designed for students in the Arts in Learning cohort at HGSE, it is open to students across concentrations and schools. Although the course is arts-based and centers the arts and culture sector, the core frameworks used are transdisciplinary and justice-forward.</p>
