Description

Rates of violence, suicide, and mental health issues in schools are at an all-time high. Though most schools are equipped with school counselors, social workers, and psychologists, it is often the teacher who becomes the first responder and the first to notice when students display mental health vulnerabilities. This course will provide educators a general understanding of the following: 1. prevalent mental health issues seen in students, including symptoms and warning signs; 2. contextual, societal, and familial factors that render students vulnerable; 3. ways to promote the mental health of students in the classroom; and 4. protocols of accessing mental health support from service providers within and outside of schools.

Students must petition to enroll in H305M and submit a statement of purpose with their petition.

Learning Goals This course will provide educators a general understanding of the following: 1. prevalent mental health issues seen in students, including symptoms and warning signs; 2. contextual, societal, and familial factors that either promote student mental health or render students vulnerable; 3. ways to promote the mental health of students in the classroom; and 4. protocols of accessing mental health support from service providers within and outside of schools.
Career Focus <p>While anyone with aims to increase their awareness of student mental health will benefit from its contents, this course is most relevant to educators with classroom teaching experience and those who plan to return to the classroom.</p>
