Education in Emergencies: Field Experience in a Humanitarian Context

*Only Offered for Online Ed.M. Students* This intensive field experience that will take place during the week of spring break in the second semester immerses students in education in emergencies (EiE) practice in a humanitarian context: Uganda, Jordan, Columbia or potentially another suitable option. The field trip will offer rich opportunities to examine how global education commitments are implemented in complex crisis settings. Students will meet with officials from ministries of education, observe coordination mechanisms related to sector planning and monitoring processes; and visit schools, early childhood centers, and adolescent learning and training programs. Through site visits, practitioner dialogues, and guided reflection, students will explore six core themes: (1) global actors and coordination; (2) country level planning and monitoring; (3) three key transition points (early childhood, foundational learning, and adolescent pathways); (4) comprehensive, whole child and protection focused responses; (5) the humanitarian development peace nexus; and (6) innovative approaches to reaching marginalized children in crisis settings, including digital learning and alternative delivery models. The course emphasizes ethical engagement, safeguarding, and reflective practice, supporting students to test concepts from IEPM-related coursework in ‘real world’ complexity, deepen their understanding of protracted crises, and build professional networks with frontline education and protection actors.
