Description

This course serves as an introduction to the International Education Policy and Management pathway in the OEL program. It provides an overview of the field of international education, the global and national institutions that shape it, and several of the analytical tools that students will use throughout the year ahead. Together, students and faculty will explore major trends, achievements, and persistent challenges in education; examine how policies, large-scale and system-level changes are developed and implemented in national contexts; and have an initial discussion on how global agendas, institutions, and financing influence education systems. The course is also designed as a community-building experience. The opening session centers on students meeting one another through their biographical statements and professional interests. Throughout the course, students will work in small groups, larger breakout groups, and plenary discussions to connect their own experience to shared themes in international education. There will be sufficient time allocated for questions, reflection, and practical planning for the academic year ahead. Course will meet on August 4, 11, 13, 18 and 20.

Learning Goals <p>The key learning goals that are built into the design of this course are: 1) understanding of the global education trends and ecosystem and 2) understanding the process of national policy formation and its relationship with global trends and institutions and 3) be introduced and “get to know” your fellow students in the course. The course will enable students to become familiar with the academic and professional resources available; meet other students in the program; and become acquainted with key faculty and teaching staff and the other resources.Additionally, we hope the assignment in this module will enhance your skills in three areas: analysis, reflection, and advice-seeking. Our intention throughout the program is to give you material that can help you develop a better understanding of your work and issues and also your colleagues.We also intend for the interactions with other participants in the program in this course to encourage you to reflect on your current professional role and the one you aspire to. As current and future leaders, we are often so busy that we fail to stop, step back, and think about and beyond the immediate task at hand. Although your two years in this program will be demanding as you balance academics with other demands, we hope that your HGSE studies will stimulate you to take the important time to reflect on your work and on yourself as a current and future leader.Finally, the best leaders turn to others for advice and counsel. The assignment for this module asks that you share your ideas and insights with classmates so that they can enrich your learning, a practice that we hope will continue throughout the remainder of your courses and your career.</p>
