Racial Formation and Education in the United States

This course explores the relationship between race and schooling by analyzing historical and contemporary studies on education in the United States. Students will read canonical and recent scholarship on the subject, allowing them to study how racial ideology has shaped the development of educational policies and practices over time, while also tracing how educational processes have contributed to the development, contestation, and transformation of racial ideas in society. Through this course, students will develop a critical vocabulary to discuss prominent issues around racial inequality in education, while also learning about the distinct racialized educational experiences of various groups (e.g., black, native, and white Americans) and how those distinct experiences relate to one another within the broader American social order. The course experience includes lectures, small and large group discussions, and student presentations.
