Course Information
Description
This course focuses on African American history in education, exploring both the histories of African American education during the 19th and 20th centuries as well as fundamental questions about the teaching of African American history in US schools. By delving into black educational history and the teaching of black history, two fundamentally aligned areas of inquiry, students will develop critical historical perspectives about key educational issues while also focusing on a specific matter of educational practice. The course experience includes lectures, small and large group discussions based on assigned texts, guest speakers, and close reading of historical scholarship and archival sources. Students will have opportunities to apply historical analyses to contemporary educational questions, conduct original historical research, and develop curricular and professional development resources informed by African American educational history.
