Course Information
Description
The aim of the course is to give students familiarity with a broad range of European policy issues: integration of markets (for goods, services, and labor), monetary union (ECB) and its consequences for fiscal policy, financial sector regulation as well as supervision. It is offered for students who would like to employ the tools they have learned in principles of economics and introductory micro and macro courses on real world cases.
Course Notes
Lectures are taught interactively. Students are very much encouraged to participate in the debate in class. (Each term, we have one guest lecture by a European policy maker.) Students will write a (short) response paper (9000 characters, with spaces – max 5 pages) as well as a (longer) term paper (38,500 characters, with spaces – max 20 pages). Students are supposed to choose their paper topics, with some guidance, of course. The ideas is to allow students to pursue research questions they are really interested in. (In mid-November, in a workshop-type environment, a preliminary version of term papers will be presented and discussed. In this smaller setting, students will also discuss the paper of a fellow student, leading off a debate in the group. The purpose of the workshop is to constructively support students in writing the final version of their paper. In early December, before submission of the paper, we will also have a “paper clinic”.) We pursue open door policy, i.e., encourage students to come to office hours.
