Ocean Chemistry and Climate (aka Marine Geochemistry)
E-PSCI 53
Subject & Catalog Number
Course Information
Description
The ocean is central to how our planet will respond to rising carbon dioxide levels, and understanding its chemistry unlocks a deeper look into that response. This course is an introduction to that conversation, drawing from real-world examples (marine CO2 uptake, coastal eutrophication, marine deoxygenation, the effects of mining, carbon capture strategies, warming of the arctic, Planetary climates, etc). The class will include lectures, asynchronous video content, student-led modules, and group work / discussions. Along the way, the class will also cover basic chemical principles (thermodynamics, solubility, saturation, redox, etc.) and the cycling of key (bio)geochemical elements in and around the ocean.
Course Notes
This course fulfills the EPS sub-discipline requirement of either Climate, Atmosphere, and Oceans, or Geobiology, Geochemistry, and Earth History. Given in alternate years.
