Course Information
Description
This course will explore ancient Greek ideologies of gender difference and sexuality. Topics will include the mythical "origins" of gender, legal definitions of marriage and adultery, the performance of gender in drama, medical models of sex and childbirth, and representations of same-sex desire across art, poetry, and philosophy. With the help of some important modern theoretical models, we will examine how sexual practices and male and female identities were imagined, formed, reinforced, institutionalized, and resisted during the archaic and classical periods (roughly 800–300 BCE).
