Introduction to Solid State Physics
APPHY 195A
Subject & Catalog Number
Course Information
Description
The physics of crystalline solids and their electric, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties. Designed as a first course in solid-state physics. Topics include: crystal binding, crystal structure, and crystal lattice vibrations (phonons); the free-electron model followed by electrons in crystalline lattices and electronic band structures; the band picture of solids (metals, semiconductors, and insulators); semiconductor devices and applications (pn junctions, transistors, and quantum wells); electron dynamics and transport in crystals; collective excitations of electrons (plasmons); optical and magnetic properties of solids; thermal properties; and superconductivity.
Course Notes
APPHY 195A is also offered as PHYSICS 195A. Students may not take both for credit.
