Course Information
Description
Innovations in surgery extend far beyond novel procedures and instruments. As knowledge advances, surgeons continuously redefine diagnostic frameworks, develop minimally invasive approaches, and in some cases reduce or eliminate the need for surgery altogether. From endovascular and fetal surgery to gender-affirming care and transplantation, evolving decisions about when, why, and how to operate have transformed every surgical field. The AISC on Anatomical Foundations of Surgical Practice centers on the “how” of surgery—how procedures are performed and how anatomical knowledge guides technique—while this course focuses on the “why”: why and when we operate, why we create and adopt innovations, and how we evaluate new approaches to ensure safety, equity, and efficacy. With each innovation come new ethical, financial, and scientific considerations, requiring rigorous and thoughtful methodologies to ensure safety, equity, and efficacy.
Delving into surgical innovations on the leading edge, this course explores the forces that drive them, focusing on the clinical contexts that enable new approaches and the evidence used to evaluate them in practice. A central feature of the course is direct engagement with expert surgeons and innovators in real clinical settings. Students will participate in cutting-edge procedures as they unfold, contribute to discussions around operative decision-making, and gain firsthand insight into how novel techniques are applied in patient care. This real-time exposure allows learners to ask questions, engage in clinical reasoning, and critically assess how innovation translates from concept to practice, without the pressure of a formal clinical rotation.
Complementing this hands-on experience, the classroom component emphasizes discussion of the unique methodological frameworks that underpin surgical innovation. Through case-based analysis and dialogue with surgical innovators, students will examine how new techniques are responsibly developed, evaluated, and introduced into practice. These discussions lay the groundwork for understanding how to thoughtfully propose and rigorously study innovative approaches, with careful attention to ethical responsibility, study design, and real-world impact.
Through these combined experiences, students will evaluate whether emerging tools and techniques truly improve upon the current standard of care, while considering their ethical, financial, and scientific implications.
Course Components:
- Participation in innovative surgical cases, where students engage with expert surgeons, take part in advanced procedures, and discuss the rationale behind novel approaches in real time.
- An interactive, discussion-based classroom format featuring guest speakers who are leaders in surgical innovation, with a focus on the methodologies used to responsibly develop and study surgical innovations.
